'Metal: It’s Only Natural’
Metals are intense.
Typically hard and shiny, they are strong but malleable.
They can be stretched, fused, and drawn into fine wire.
They can be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking. They readily carry electricity and heat. Their atoms are in a virtual “sea” of outer electrons that jump from atom to atom. They are stable but possess the ability to change.
We depend on their unique natural qualities for industry,
commerce… and for art.
An exhibition of jewelry and sculptural artwork from members of the Metal Arts Guild, the Northern California Enamel Guild, and the ACCI Gallery that explore the boundaries, integration /
collision, and diversity of the natural qualities of metal as well as its relation to the natural world.
The Metal Arts Guild (MAG) is an organization of people who are skilled, interested, or share in the production and exhibition of metals.
The Northern California Enamel Guild (NCEG) is made up of enamelists working to create community through sharing the enamel arts, glass fused to metal.
Guild members include professional and emerging artists, from the beginner to the master craftsperson. They are comprised of educators, students, collectors, hobbyists, production artists, writers, and supporters.
Arts & Crafts Cooperative, Inc. (ACCI), located in the heart of North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto, is a
member-based community of artisans, artists, and art patrons.

About the Exhibit:
Collectors and others interested in enamel art will find this summer particularly invigorating with all the options for seeing both historical and current enameling. Northern California Enamels overlaps with the traveling exhibit Little Dreams in Glass and Metal, a retrospective of American enameling, at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.
As an adjunct activity, The Center for Enamel Art will sponsor an all-day East Bay bus tour to enamelists’ studios and enamel exhibitions, a day designed for collectors and other lovers of the medium. Lireille and its enamels exhibition will be one of the exciting stops on that tour. The dates for Northern California Enamels at Lireille are July 12 to September 10, to coincide with not only the Little Dreams show, but the American Craft Council show in San Francisco.
Lireille is an jewelry gallery dedicated to promote art jewelry awareness and availability to the general public and push the creativity boundaries in art jewelry. A jewelry gallery located at 3980 Piedmont Avenue in Oakland.

The Center for Enamel Art advances and preserves the art and technology of enameling by nourishing and expanding the enamel community and serving as a catalyst through education, economic development and partnerships. Casting for Jewelry & Small Sculpture
Learn Centrifugal and Direct Pour methods of Casting molten metal. Will discuss the use of Cuttlefish, Tufa Stone, and Charcoal block to carve molds for direct pour casting. Learn to carve wax models for Lost Wax casting. Sprue, Invest, Cast in a centrifuge, and Finish your piece for Jewelry or Small Sculpture. Please come prepared to work the first day, some supplies will be available in class for purchase. Supply costs vary $50+. May also be used as independent study for experienced students. 8 weeks

Intermediate Enameling
Focus on the enameling techniques of Basse Taille, Champlevé, and Cloisonné. Use various methods of texturing metal such as roller printing and acid etching to cover with glass for the Basse Taille. Create cavities to fill with glass by acid etching for Champlevé and small wire to create cloisons to fill for Cloisonné. Previous enameling experience preferred. 8 weeks (No Class July 4th)

Metals & Jewelry Camp

Join us in the metals studio to create jewelry and works of art in this one-week camp!

Then use your newly learned skills to create a piece to be enameled with colored glass fused to metal.

The Independent Studio is a great class if you need extra time to get those Holiday gifts completed

Learn the process of making a rubber mold of your original cast metal pieces using Natural and Silicone Rubber. What's in a name???
Since I up and moved to the Bay, I decided it was a good time to renew my self and branding as an artist. Start fresh as it were. I have been using the name Incognito Designs when I sell every day Jewelry, while using Holly Carter when I enter exhibitions with my sculptural art. After much thought and advise from some friends, I am going to just keep it simple and true. My name Holly J. Carter for the business name and as the artist.
What a novel idea, just use my name!
I went back and forth with different variations on my name paired with metal works, art works, designs, etc.. Branding can be a difficult thing, to be confident enough that one day just your name will have enough weight to be a brand is astounding and intimidating. I was also stuck on the fact that I had to end the business name with something that was descriptive. My good friend Adiel suggested thinking of it as simply a tag line that I use on advertising, but not part of the actual name. I was making it too complicated as I usually do!
So, Holly J. Carter, Metal and Jewelry Art. Plain and Simple.
(Or, maybe Holly J. Carter, Metalsmith, Sculptural and Wearable Art? Or Sculpture and Jewelry Art?
Oh boy, here I go again!)
I also have many ideas for a new line of supplies to sell on sites like Etsy for those people who like to buy bobbles and beads and what not. Therefore my current Incognito Designs will transition into Incognito Designs by Holly J. Carter, selling supplies and whatever random cool vintage stuff I pick up now and then.
I am then going to start a new Etsy site with my name for all of my Jewelry and Art. Of course I am also working on perfecting the shopping cart on my personal website as well.
Now that I have gotten through the difficult part, time to design a new logo for a stamp, jewelry charm, business cards, website banner, etc., etc..
Wow, there is lots to do!
When I finally get it all done, then I have to wait for the sales to come.
I will keep posting on my progress for those interested. I would love to get some feed back on the process. I just hope that I can get more than my one current follower for my blog so that I can get that feedback. Especially since that one follower is me! Hehe.

Cash Mob
Cash Mob at Eden Gardenhouse and After Party at McGurkee's Italian Kitchen
A cash mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business and all buy items from that business. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community. Our after party will be held at McGurkee's Italian Kitchen.

Workshop Fee: $60.00
Learn how to texture copper disks with tools such as a hammer or sand paper and finish with a patina or polish. Make your own sterling silver ear wires and assemble your earrings with sterling silver jump rings. *The earrings each student completes may be different from those shown.
Class fee includes supplies for One pair of copper disk earrings with sterling silver earwires. Instructor will supply tools for student use during class.*Additional supplies may be available for purchase from instructor, please bring cash.

Instructor, Holly Carter is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelors of Fine Art in Metals, Minor in Interior Design History. She is an internationally known artist and her work is currently shown in galleries across the Southwestern United States. Holly is an instructor for the Tempe Edna Vihel Center for the Arts, the Mesa Art Center, and The Phoenix Center for the Arts. Is a member of The Society of North American Goldsmiths, The Arizona Designer Craftsmen (ADC), and the coordinator for the ADC Metalink group.

Holly Carter is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelors of Fine Art in Metals. She is an internationally known artist and her work is currently shown in galleries across the Southwestern United States. Holly is an instructor for the Tempe Edna Vihel Center for the Arts and the Mesa Art Center. Is a member of The Arizona Designer Craftsmen and The Society of North American Goldsmiths.

Night Gallery Exhibition
ASU Metals Alumni Exhibition

Cost: Free and open to the public, donations welcome
ASU Alumni artists include recent and not-so recent graduate students and undergraduates in a program that has produced talented, award winning metalsmiths and jewelers. From one of the best Metals programs in the country, this exhibit showcases the many talents and detailed workmanship of a variety of artists with diverse approaches to working with metal.
Along with the traditional materials and techniques such as blacksmithing, forging and forming, these artists include contemporary practices in enamel, found objects and mixed media.
Some of the artists included in this exhibit are Becky & Tedd McDonah, Deb Lozier, Jessica Calderwood, Lauren McAdams Selden, Eric Burris, Nissa Kubly, Lynette Andreasen, Jill Baker-Gower, Victoria Altepeter, Polly Smith, Holly Carter, and Dale Wedig.
The Night Gallery at the Tempe Marketplace is an exhibition space for ASU School of Art faculty, graduate students and alumni in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The gallery is a result of a partnership between the Herberger Institute and Vestar Development Company.
The Night Gallery is located at Tempe Marketplace (intersection of McClintock Rd. and the 202 at 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway) in the District (west end, south side) between Barnes & Noble bookstore and Aeropostale.

To Cut or Not to Cut?
I have been working on these two wall pieces and the recycled wood on which I plan to mount them, when I began to think of another way to mount them than originally planned. I had intended to cut the large piece of wood in half and mount them on each piece of wood individually, but then I thought 'how about mounting the enameled pieces on one large piece of wood?'. I started thinking that one large wall piece might be kind a cool!
It was then suggested to me that I cut down the larger piece of wood and then mount the two pieces together on a smaller piece of wood, but I am not sure I like that idea? So, I am still wondering, should I mount them on the larger piece together or cut it in half and mount them as two separate wall pieces that will be sold as a set?

Framed Wall Pieces/Set of 2
Sea foam Green Vitreous Glass Enamel on Copper set in Recycled Wood Frames. Hand pierced Ginkgo Leaves, slightly domed and set from behind in wood frames made of recycled wood from a broken outdoor umbrella and a weather worn pine pallet.

My First Completed Pewter Scultpure
This past weekend I finally finished to satisfaction my first pewter sculpture. After a few years and a few mended holes, I found success! Pewter is not an easy metal to fabricate a hollow form from if you are used to high temp fabrication. I melted a hole into it three times and I have a scar on my leg to show for one of them. Now I have to finish the stand for it, but for now here is a quick pic of the pewter.
